Working from home: Space Management
In the past 10 years of working at home I’ve learned that a working space is extremely important to keep focus.
If you don’t have the ability to use a room as an office space, ensure that you have a corner with good lighting, that you are able to dedicate to working. It is important not to mix your free time space with your working space for the sanity of your own self. When you are resting you don’t want to be reminded of important work and when you are working you want to keep focus. Ensure you have good space, clothing and time etiquette and be kind to yourself in this space. Beware of digital distractions like the television. You can watch TV when you “go home”. So the lounge is probably not the best office space for working.
A window, a plant and some fresh air helps for good focus. Allow this space to be a quiet work space, to ensure you focus on your work load. The kitchen can then be a free space for tea and lunch breaks. Also, don’t ‘go to the office’ after-hours and on weekends, unless it is really necessary – you may start feeling a bit boxed in if your work and free space overlap too much. If you are not often out on the road, but office(home)- bound, then use your lunch hour to free yourself up. Go grab a coffee from somewhere else in your house or even pop out of your property to get one (assuming you aren’t in lockdown). Also go to the food store for food supplies. A quick walk around the block or two is also very useful as it helps to get your blood flowing and clear your head. Anything to F5 (refresh) the brain and get your focus back is helpful.
Remember to get up, get ready & ‘go to the office’ when it’s work time.
