Social mediaThere was a huge increase in social media traffic during 2020 as people tried to connect to the outside world from the confines of their homes during lockdowns and social interaction restrictions. These traffic increases have not actually completely tapered off yet.

There has also never been a better time to start putting together and enacting an effective social media strategy. And while this may seem a rather daunting application, there is no need to pull the trigger on expensive consulting agencies when a few simple tricks can be followed in order to get you started on the right track.

Hootsuite.com for one have been in the business for a long time and provide some fantastic insights on their blog.

The following are just a few of the top tips

Be consistent
While each different platform has its own algorithm to determine post rankings, a consistent regular posting schedule is always a good way to start.
Hootsuite suggests that the best time to post on social media platforms in general is 10:00am on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. So it is best to try and take advantage of these windows by posting your most engaging content at these times, although making a point of posting as regularly as possible is just as important.

It’s all about engagement
Building up a following is a matter of give-and-take so it’s important to engage well with your audience.
Show an interest in your followers posts by commenting and liking their content and make a point of answering their comments and direct messages.
Reaching out to your audience gives your brand a personality and prompts the same behaviour from your followers.

Always be positive
While this is a great piece of life advice, it is just as important to take the same attitude towards your social media content.
Avoid any topics that might galvanize your audience or leave them with a negative feeling.
Keep postings light and positive.

Hashtags are key
Choosing hashtags is very important. Most Social media managers would caution against simply slapping #love and #instagood on every post and hoping for the best.
Rather research hashtags that suit your brand and are already generating engagement.
While you can reuse your favourite hashtags, experts do recommend that you change them regularly and that you also make sure that the hashtags you use match the content of your actual posts.
